Newbold Quarry is a former cement quarry that flooded many years ago.

Description

As its name suggests, Newbold Quarry is a former cement quarry, which flooded many years ago. Taken over by the Borough Council in 1991, site security and access improvements have continued, the Council working with voluntary wardens and the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to manage the site. Newbold Quarry Park attracts many water birds such as great crested grebe, swan, moorhen and a range of ducks. The clean limey water also supports the increasingly rare native crayfish, which look like small lobsters.

There are various paths around this reserve. Some paths are accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Additionally, the site has seen the design and construction of a fishing pier to allow physically disabled people to reach the water's edge safely and a disabled-user toilet and car park has also been provided.

Further improvements to the footpath infrastructure have been carried out in conjunction with the Community Reparation (Probation) Service providing work opportunities for young first time offenders. Other interesting projects include the creation of a 'frog escape route', clearance works and a number of other schemes. Bat boxes are provided and erected by the Warwickshire Bat Group around the site.

The Millennium Marque is a prestigious 'sustainable environment' award administered via the Tidy Britain Group. It involves organisations submitting a suitable scheme, which is monitored over a three-year period to ensure its aims, and objectives remain constant and are met. The award centres on sites which show excellence in sustainable environmental management and identify clear community involvement. We are delighted to be the only site in Warwickshire, and one of only 125 in England and Wales, to be awarded the Millennium Marque.
